General TV thread
Currently watching Game of Thrones season 4 with the other half.
Still not as good as the books...

Re: General TV thread
I'm a very slow consumer of TV. I'm useless at watching it "live", and even on DVD, if I have a spare few hours, I'm gonna watch a movie.
But I am currently watching series 1 of Arrow, which I am loving a lot, series 4 of Chuck, which has been very good and funny, but starting to get a bit samey now, and finally, watching series 2 (of 10!!!) of Friends.
After this lot, I got Castle to watch, which I really really can't wait to watch.

Me and the wife finished watching True Detective over the weekend. It is a phenomenal show. Which from me is high praise because I usually can't stand cop shows.

I have done things the other way round and I'm up to date with the TV shows and half way through the second book. I have found that watching the TV show first has enhanced my reading experience and I can really visualise the scenes being described on the page

Re: General TV thread
Problem I have with that is you have pre-defined images already rather than your own imagination. I do understand why it helps though as there is a lot of information to take in.
Re: General TV thread
Yeah I prefer to read the book of something first let my mind decide what the hero , the villian the girl etc look like, what the world or sword or spaceship look like and then watch the tv show/film and see how close there vision is to mine...
Sometimes when its an old book its cool because you get to see it remade several times by different people in different ways I love the book I am Legend.... the book been made 3 times as major movies the first being Vincent price in The Last man on earth, then charlten hestan in the Omega man and finally Will Smith in I am Legend (there's also a few cheap films made from it I think).... Then you can see which is closest to your own vision, which holds truest to the book etc

I found that when I read LOTR for the first time, I started to find the wealth of characters and history and that many characters have more than one name, quite confusing.
I then saw the movies, and loved them.
When I re-read LOTR after the movies, it helped me to visualise characters as they were in the movie, really helping me to follow the book a lot better.

I'm currently finishing off season 2 of defiance and following the strain. Game of thrones is okay but I feel over hyped.
I watched true detective a few months back and its outstanding. That one shot in the ghetto is a fav of mine

I need to check out True Detective at some point.
I totally agree about Game of Thrones. Too big for it's boots.

Re: General TV thread
I've got 3 episodes of my Sopranos box-set left and I'm really sad it's coming to an end.
Such a quality TV programme. It always treated me as somebody who has a brain and really concentrated on character development to carry the storylines along. It also constantly reminds me how sad it is that James Gandolfini is dead.

Watched The Leftovers the other night, the new mystery drama series from the creators of Lost in which 2% of the worlds population suddenly and inexplicably vanish into thin air. it was a bit slow at times but intrigued me enough to carry on watching for a while longer.

Re: General TV thread
Anyone watched Orphan Black? Really good series they`re just filming season 3. Only 10 episodes per season as they`re difficult to shoot. You`ll understand why when you watch it. Highly recommended by me.
Also can`t wait for The walking dead season 5 to start.

Orphan Black is a fantastic show though I did think that season two dipped a little compared to the first.
How Tatiana Maslany does not get nominated for the awards I do not know.

Re: General TV thread
Anyone else watching Gotham on Channel 5? First episode tonight. I loved the Frank Miller stlye, down and gritty Gotham, really taking Batman back to it's 80s style grunge. Didn't like the hammy acting and poor dialogue though. Will keep at it though.
I'm terrible at remembering to watch tv live on air though. I managed to watch half of Agents of Shield before giving up. I much perfer them on DVD, and feel that similarly, I will keep up with Gotham for a while, then it will drop off my radar.
On the theme of Superhero TV though, anybody else also watch Arrow? I'm near the end of series 1 now, and it's bloody brilliant!

I'm enjoying Gotham its got a good mix of the dark and campy sides of the Batman settings.
As for Arrow I'm currently in the first third of season 2 and really enjoying. I'm planning on giving The Flash a go once I reach season 3 of Arrow as that is a spin off show.

Re: General TV thread
Watched the first episode of Gotham the other day, felt it was a rushed episode to introduce everyone but will still be sticking with it.
SHIELD started on channel 4 last night but was watching a film so will catch up with that over the weekend.

Re: General TV thread
Finished series 1 of Arrow tonight, and thought it was great. It had lots of multiple story threads running through it, which kept it consistently interesting, and did the superhero thing well. Arrow kicked ass, looked cool, and is the best superhero thing outside of Marvel. It could have done with a bit more humour at times, instead of laughs coming from the oh so earnest characters. And there were a couple of dud episodes as there always are in these long running TV series. But overall, it was brilliant, and left just enough interest for a second series to pick things up.
