Had a blast playing Imperial Assault yesterday afternoon/evening!
There is a lot going on in a given mission but once you've got the basics down it is surprisingly fairly straight forward.

The Star Wars Thread - Page 2 Photo-04-05-2015-19-41-01

The only real issue I have with it at the moment is that there is a lot of prep needed before you play it for the first time. There is a lot of nitty gritty to figure out and 4 (yes FOUR) separate rulebooks. Three of which that you need to dip into to get the best possible experience and for the game to run smoothly.

I'm expecting this issue to subside the more I play but man there is a lot of fiddling to begin with!

Back from holiday and I managed to finish Star Wars: Tarkin while I was away!

The Star Wars Thread - Page 2 Tarkin

I really enjoyed it! Set during the construction of the Death Star but that is sort of not important to the overall story. It is all about what kind of a man Tarkin is and how he came to be. Lots of flashbacks and such as the main plot plays out. Overall it is a lot better than I expected it to be. Smile

That starwars game looks like the Spacemarine board game and Warhammer 4000's starwars pyjama wearing love child...in a good way.

Also being a huge fan of the late Peter Cushing and any character he has breathed life into that books looks very interesting.

The next Star Wars spin off movie will be a young Han Solo adventure.

But Han Solo was young in A New Hope...

I haven't read about it, is going to be like Han Solo The Wonder Years or set just before A New Hope?

I wouldn't really say Han Solo was young - Harrison Ford was in his mid-30s! They've said it will focus on how he became a smuggler.

Mid-thirties is young I'll have you know... Very Happy

Could be interesting but then sometimes it can be best not knowing how characters became characters.

Looking at you Darth Vader...

Did I read correctly that Darth himself will be appearing in the Rogue One film?

Post by cal_el Tue Aug 04, 2015 12:55 pm

I spent the past weekend in the city in a swanky hotel with my wife because we deserved a break and one of our activities was going to Secret Cinema Star Wars on Saturday night.

To sum up: It is amazing. Similar-but-Different to last year's Back To The Future mayhem. But still amazing.

Star Wars is a franchise near and dear to my heart so I was in permanent geek out mode all night with my very understanding wife by my side along for the ride.

We got there nice and early so we were among the first group of people let inside the main area of the event, a recreation of Mos Eisley and other Tatooine landmarks. It lead to this brilliant feeling of being among a very select few people who got to see some of the stuff. Lots of the events and character interactions happen on loops so everybody can pretty much see and do everything if they are on the ball. But for the start of the evening just me and my wife got to see Obi-Wan slowly walk out of his house, stand and stare at the twin suns of Tatooine as the space port slowly came to life around us. We then walked up to him and asked where we could find two farmers. Which then lead us to the Lars family house so my wife could trade some seeds for a bag of crystals. We ended up staying there for a little while chatting to them and drinking blue milk! (Spoilers it tastes just like milk.) Then as we were leaving Luke Skywalker came in to get some things he needed.

The evening was full of character interactions and moments like this as you made your way through the multipath trading and bartering roleplaying game that ran throughout the whole thing. From playing cards with Lando. To finding the right Rebel contact in the city and taking him to one side to discreetly show him the blueprints for all the Imperial ships I had on me while a squad of Stormtroopers and Boba Fett marched past. So many cool things happened and the experience was greatly enhanced by both me and my wife getting into character. I didn't even get to the end of the trading and bartering sequence. I got about 2/3rds of the way through from the looks of things. The reward for finishing it looked like you were given prime viewing for the really cool thing that happens before you watch the movie. You could also just wonder around and soak it all in enjoying those moments when characters cross your path.

So many cool things happened in the run up to watching the movie and the last 20-40mins of the walking around experience were electric as things moved towards the conclusion of A New Hope. Watching Empire had less live action acting bits than Back To The Future last year had but they made up for it with lighting effects that enhanced the film. Also all the stuff before the film was way better than what they did last year in my opinion.

It was an amazing evening and well worth the crazy money I paid for the tickets. (£78! EACH! Shocked) If you are a Star Wars fan and can afford the tickets I highly recommend going if you can.

That sounds really cool, Cal (Star Wars themed 'You Me Bum-Bum Train'Very Happy ).  I'd read about the problems it had last year with BTTF (though I recall that wasn't your experience), so it's good that it had managed to survive the bad publicity.

I don't think the price is that bad for what you get (i.e. the experience), compared to prices of  a West End show or a PL football match

Yeah that's how I managed to justify it. We spend as much going to the one or two West End Shows my wife wants to see each year.

As for the problems with BTTF they cancelled the first week of performances because they weren't ready, my tickets were for much later in the run so it was a well oiled machine by the time I saw it. I'm guessing it was the same with Star Wars because they've been running it for weeks so I get the benefit of them working out the kinks.

I was wondering where Luke is when watching the new trailer.

He's not that new bad guy is he? Could he have fallen to the dark side?

I meant on the poster, he's the only major character not on there.

I have to agree that I was a bit underwhelmed with the trailer but I did like that pretty much nothing was revealed.

Have my tickets booked for the 17th for 6pm, a full hour before Cal. Razz Very Happy

I think my plan is to avoid the internet on the day until I see it. Spoilers are going to be everywhere!

Speaking of spoilers Shattered Empire the comic miniseries that is set after Return of the Jedi has finished. It's got some cool stuff in it that links into the upcoming movie. I could do a quick breakdown if people are interested Smile
