Xbox One Empty Xbox One

Post by megablast16 Thu Nov 06, 2014 9:53 am

Finally decided to take the plunge and have ordered an Xbox One from GAME, I've gone for the COD: AW Special Edition bundle. I decided to go for it now as I'm saving quite a lot of money on it, first of all I cashed in my GAME Virtual Loyalty Shares for which I got £152 worth of Reward Points which, when added to my existing points gave me £170 to deduct plus I've sold my old Xbox 360 250GB Slim and a bunch of games to CEX and the money from that lot will go towards the Xbox One as well. Altogether it's only costing me £150 for the new console which has an RRP of £399.99.

To be honest I'm not that fussed about the customised console and controller you get with this bundle, although apparently the game itself is pretty good, but it comes with a 1TB HDD, currently the only way you can get that much internal storage with the Xbox One, so that's why I went for that bundle.

Welcome to the club!

This thread also made me realise I haven't played a game on my Xbox One in months! It's just used for watching TV shows and movies because I have my Apple TV hooked up to it.

Post by megablast16 Fri Nov 07, 2014 1:21 pm

My Xbox One has arrived now, just set it up and I've spent the last 30 minutes exploring the UI. It's taking some getting used to after over a year of PS4/PS3 and it took me a while just to find the System Settings, doh! First impressions are that the PS4 UI is better, but as I said I'm still getting used to the Xbox One's.

Trouble is I've got nothing to play on it yet, it did come with COD: AW but it's a digital copy with a redeemable code so I've got to wait for the bloody thing to download now, which at 46GB could take a while. I'm hoping to get Sunset Overdrive soon as well.

PS: Will the Xbox One switch off after a certain length on inactivity, and if so will the download stop? It's set to Instant On power mode, which is supposed to automatically download updates and purchases but I'm not sure about downloads already in progress. It's also set to auto off after 1 hour of inactivity, should I change this too?

If you have downloads setup in standby then downloads will continue if you turn the console off liked the 360 does.

Same for me when I got TitanFall with mine. Took ages to download. I got Ryse with it but even that took forever to install!

I don't usually buy full retail games digitally but I didn't have a choice with this. It's not something I'll do again though, it took about twelve hours!

Post by megablast16 Mon Nov 10, 2014 7:49 am

So I've spent my first weekend with an Xbox One  and I can give some thoughts on the console.

First of all it's one, big, ugly mother, but I always knew that, however that cavernous interior does have it's advantages. It's quieter than PS4, a lot quieter unless I've got an unusually noisy PS4, and the case feels a lot cooler to the touch after a couple of hours of use, no doubt helped by the power supply being external. I don't think overheating will ever be a problem.

The Xbox One's UI is a messy, cluttered, confusing affair though - way too many tiles. The PS4's interface way better imo. The controller though is excellent, a nice size and weight with great sicks and triggers and it just feels more solid than the Dualshock 4.

Overall, controllers apart, the PS4 seems the better games console, and I can see it being my main console this gen with Xbox One mainly being used for it's exclusives, which would be the opposite of last gen. I'm expecting bigger and better things from both consoles next year though.

Had people round at the weekend and we naturally started playing Minecraft Xbox One Edition. I had honestly forgotten about the pure simple fun of Minecraft. So there I've played some games on it again Very Happy

But today I will be getting Halo: The Master Chief Collection in the post!
Xbox One Halo_master_chief_CELG
It may be to much Halo in one go for any man but my eternal love for this franchise means I will be playing the living crap out of this!

The question I am faced with now though is do I jump straight to Halo 2: Anniversary or start with the new version of Halo: Anniversary? Decisions, decisions, decisions!

I've never been a massive Halo fan, I loved Combat Evolved and Halo 4 was good but 2 & 3 I was never that keen on and I never really got into the multi-player. Having said that though I can see that this is a wonderful package for true Halo fans with so much content, arguably the best collection of games in a single package since The Orange Box.

I just brought a XBOX One .... I had a voucher code from Amazon for 20quid off any purchase over 100quid. Then in a lightning deal a Xbox One with Alien Isolation was 269.99. Managed to grab the deal and thought well I will try the voucher but I bet they make it say it cant be used on this and what the heck it went through.

Going to take Isolation when it arrives and trade it in hoping if the CEX trade in price remains the same and I can get game to meet cex's trade in then I can swap it to dead rising for a quid or two.

Ok it was supposed to arrive on the 6th and it arrived today. I have got it download all the games with gold games I claimed which is about 7 of them.

I got lego hobbit in a flash sale for it for 12quid and Ive brought Titan fall with its pass in the xbox live black friday sale as a digital download for 10quid with the season pass. Was really weird the games 10, the season pass is 5 but the deluxe edition which is the game plus pass is 10.

Im going to see about trading Alien in for something else at my local store early next week.

I'm now part of the XBone Massive, got one today for Christmas. Bundled with it was Wolfenstein, Sunset Overdrive, Garden Warfare and Dead Rising 3. I'll be trading those last two games in, might get Titanfall instead.

Id wait on Titanfall, look at what Microsoft do in there sales.   Black friday weekend I got as a download Titanfall with the season pass for 10quid... be worth looking if they do it again between now and new year.

Dead Rising 3 is pretty decent once you get past the beginning.

Bump!

Bought an Xbox One today. Rakuten had a 15% off everything day today, which took it down to £235 and I went through Topcashback who had a one day only 12.12% cash back offer when shopping at Rakuten.  When I get that back, it'll take it to £207. And there'll be c£25-worth of rakuten points to spend too.

Couldn't really say no...

Let us know what you think Soren.

I have yet to properly warm to mine. I've only played Peggle 2 and Game of Thrones. I don't love it the way I loved my 360 years ago. I think it's the interface that lets it down; after the simplicity of the PS4 the X-1 feels cluttered and far too advert-laden.

I disagree. Go and look and the 360 dash then compare it to the Xbox One dash. I think you'll be surprised at how much less advertising there is. I certainly think so.

It's not dissimilar to the PS4 dash it's just less horizontal based!

The single thing that is still superior with the Xbox is the controller. It's just so much better in nearly every way. Don't get me wrong, the PS4 controller is infinitely better than the PS3 one but it's still not as good as the Xbox One pad.

The Xbox One is a great all round machine and the superior non-gaming offerings on it compared to PS4 means that mine is constantly on but games wise for me the PS4 has the edge.

Also I prefer the PS4 controller. The Xbox One pads feel cheap to me and one of mine is already comig apart at the seams despite hardly being used!

But this year sees new Halo and Fable Legends which I am really looking forward to!

Oddly I feel exactly the opposite, that the Xbox One controllers is much more solid and well built. I've had my Xbox One for a few months and the controller still looks like new after plenty of use, after a similar period with the Dualshock 4 I'd already had two triggers break on separate pads and the rubber splitting on the sticks.

I do like the PS4 controller, I prefer it's shape to the Xbox One pad and it's a big improvement over the Dualshock 3 in a number of ways but I do think it feels the flimsier of the two.

Ergonomically the Xbox One pad is far superior for me. It feels more 'natural' when holding it in terms of where my fingers lay on the triggers and the stick placement is still better.

The triggers seem very far apart in comparison on the PS4 controller.

Neither feels worse in terms of quality. No issues as such for me. One trigger felt slightly sticky but that was after a year of use and predominantly playing BF4 so the right trigger got A LOT of use!!
