What are you listening to?
Today I listened to Black Sabbath's Paranoid.
Absolutely classic album.

I've been listening too:
Massive Addictive by Amaranthe. Good, but the weakest of their three albums
Ecliptica 15th Anniversary Remastered Edition by Sonata Arctica which is a complete re recording of their debut album. What it loses in freshness and raw youthfulness of the original is more than made up for by the slick and improved technical ability gained from a now more experienced band. Still a classic.

Sonata Arctica are one of those bands that I keep meaning to properly check out and then promptly forget.

Do it! They are one of my favourite bands. Not to everyone's tastes though as they are quite experimental metal. There's a great Sonata Arctica Collection best of that gives a broad overview of the band but it misses some of the oddities and unusual tracks that make SA unique in my opinion. Things like banjo power metal on Cinderblox, the Days of Gray concept album and the ode to nature of Wildfire. It's a cliche, but I find there's more to SA than a first listen, and you can listen to a song many times and still find new bits to it after lots of listens. I like how their themes cross over to many albums as well, with recurring wolves imagery and even characters like Dana.dste01 wrote:Sonata Arctica are one of those bands that I keep meaning to properly check out and then promptly forget.
Reading that back it all sounds rather artsy and poncy, so don't forget they kick ass with guitar riffs, but I found that there was more to their songs than I expected and that's why they have staying power in my CD player.

Artsy and poncy, I listen to Nightwish...
In all seriousness which none best of album would you recommend to start off with?
Today I listened to Bon Jovis Keep the Faith album, I don't care what anyone says I think that it's a damn fine album and shows what the band used to be able to do in a good way. Also listened to Smashing Pumpkins best of as I have a very love/hate relationship with the band and despite owning most of their earlier stuff I find this to be the best way to listen to them sometimes.

To be honest the Ecliptica rerelease is a great place to start, as it shows their true metal heritage with their more recent "sound". From there the best of collection, and I'm sure you can make your own way from there on.

I was watching a Bon Jovi live programme on BBC Four the other night and it's embarrassing how much Jon sounds like a bad tribute act these days.

Re: What are you listening to?
havent heard him lattly but there are quiet a few acts that carry on past there prime and become a bit like that.
One of the saddest things I saw on TV was Art Garfunkel singing, now I love him and Paul Simon but he just cant sing any more. I didn't feel nasty about him I felt sad he seemed so old and didn't seem to be able to get enough breathe to sing all of the words. The crowd clapped like wild but you could tell it was more just to see the man not because he was good.

I disagree about BonJovi but I am a fan. The last show I saw in Hyde park was fantastic, and when he comes back I will most likely see them again.

Some tracks from the new album by Archive, they're virtually unknown in the UK but I've been listening to them for years. Here some videos of theirs so you can hear what they are like.

Re: What are you listening to?
I'm listening to a playlist of sci-fi soundtrack songs because I am just that cool!
Re: What are you listening to?
AC/DC - Rock or Bust.
The new album and in all honesty it's pretty poor. I know that the band pretty much stick to what they know but this one really sounds like they have just phoned it in.

Re: What are you listening to?
Been listening to a few new albums:
Ale storm - Sunset on the Golden Age. Quite possibly the best album from the pirate rockers. Varied and fun, with some more depth to the musical arrangements this time rather than just heavy guitars and shouting. Critics continue to spell their doom, but on this I hope they continue for longer.
Wednesday 13 - Monsters of the Universe Come Out and Plague. Wednesdays first concept album but more a collection of songs with a recurring sci if theme than a concept album. Good, but lacks the catchiness of previous songs.
Alice Cooper - Raise the Dead: Live at Wacken. Alice is brilliant as ever but the album does include any crowd interaction and just flies through the songs. You can barely hear the crowd, and having been to Wacken can attest that it's loud!

The Twin Peaks doc on Radio 4.
It was OK, tried to cram too much into just thirty minutes.

Saw Skid Row live last summer. Youth Gone Wild was particularly brilliant!
