But it just pissed me off so much and made me realise Modern Combat shooters aren't for me. The Crucible in Destiny however is perfect for me. A good variety of modes and special events, tactical combat that requires teamwork. Overshields and cool weapons and abilities. It's like Halo Reach multiplayer on crack!
Re: Destiny
Is the Emperor's New Clothes effect wearing off now then?
Listening to Giant Bombcast this morning they were saying that they couldn't believe how small the game feels after all the hype. Missions keep sending you to the same maps over and over again and it's just "Go there, kill that, collect thing to open up next mission"
I think my decision to hold fire is shaping up to have been the right one for me. I'll let the game mature a bit before I join in.

Yeah I've decided not to get it too, I was undecided all week but taking everything into account I just don't think it's my kind of game.

Re: Destiny
I think most people got carried away with the hype and alot of others just like to bash anything that gets alot of hype (eg. Apple products over Android products).
The MP is far better than Halo. I could write a full piece just on this alone.
The single player can be done in co-op but also has others in the instance with you. The point is its not a mmo or a coop SP game but somewhere in between.
Replaying missions yes can be done but with friends are good fun. But there will come a point that there will be no point in doing them. But how many times did you replay Halo SP or any other? Its the same thing but with your mates playing in Destiny.
The bottom line is this. The game is solidly built.
Runs smooth and is beautiful rendered.
SP missions are fun and add a little competition between mates.
Also there is value in exploring.
Most importantly the MP is superb. All the skill of Halo but 10x the thrills.
Servers are rock solid and no lag.
Matchmaking could be better but not bad.
Maps are great.
Also and lastly Bungie are supporting this game for years to come.
What bit of that is bad?
If you have ever played an mmo you will have revisited the same areas 1000's of times literally. And like a MMO (which Destiny is not) you have to do different missions within the same locales. Yet in Destiny this is being flamed for in the media lol!
In FFXIV you would have to walk miles across the same old map just to deliver a letter! AND then walk back again!
In Destiny even when your on the Moon (for instance) again for the umpteenth time, its always fun. The fun I suspect won't last forever which is why (hopefully) Bungie will keep releasing content. But I have done some of these missions alone, with mates, with randoms quite alot. And I'm the kind of gamer who never returns to a SP game after completing it. Never ever.
IF you don't or didn't like Halo, you most probably won't like Destiny.
IF you don't like RPGs, you most probably won't like Destiny.
IF you don't like Online social games, you most probably won't like Destiny.
If you don't like solo SP missions, you most probably won't like Destiny.
IF you don't like FPSs, you most probably won't like Destiny.
BUT IF you like just one of the above, you will probably like Destiny.
For the first time in a long time I met a bloke at work who confessed to me that he started playing this last friday afternoon....and went to bed at 7am the next day. I can't remember a game that led to a grown man pulling an all nighter lol.
Its not perfect, but the beta showed everyone that. but to get a 10 a game doesnt need to be perfect. It just needs to be legendary, like Halo was/is. Destiny is another legendary game from Bungie, there is not one part of the game that doesn't work as it should do.
So for me, it's a 10. Let the hype haters hate, there normally the ones posting to IGN how much Android is awesome and how much they hate Apple Leave this beautiful game to those that can appreciate it.

Re: Destiny
Personally Odyssey, I don't understand how you can gush so much about the game but I do however respect your enthusiasm and your opinion.
I think the main reason for reviews and people in general being a bit down on the game is that it's not clear as to what type of game Destiny really is. I'm one of these people.
People like to categorise things and it leads to confusion when it's not obvious. Let's ask some questions...
Is an FPS? Mostly, yes. This is the thing that you could easily say the game is most like if asked the question.
Is it an MMO? I don't have much experience but I'm led to believe it has elements but it's not really an MMO.
Is it an RPG? I would say this is the thing it's the least like. Yes it has elements of levelling up and inventory management but that's not exclusive to RPGs these days.
Is it a co-op game? I would say mostly yes. I played the alpha completely alone and the beta a bit alone and it was f*cking boring. Yes, you can play it alone but I would argue that it was never designed or intended to be played that way.
Is it an online shooter like Battlefield or CoD? There's elements of this but that aspect of the game (The Crucible) isn't strong enough in my opinion to compete with the likes of those games if that's all you wanted to do.
So what it is it??
I really don't know. When I'm not playing the game I wonder what I see in it but when I am playing it I really enjoy it.
This article by Joystiq sums up what I think the game might be (a dungeon crawler like Torchlight and Diablo) and I'd be inclined to agree.
http://www.joystiq.com/2014/09/16/destiny-review-loot-loops/
I agree with Odyssey that the game has a lot of positives. The shooting mechanics are great, it's smooth and easy to get used to. The menus and general presentation is slick and pretty straightforward. The graphics are lovely. The sound effects (particularly weapons) and the music are atmospheric and really add to the ambience of the world.
I've heard people say the enemies are dull. I disagree. I think they're varied and interesting and figuring out how best to kill them is a fun challenge.
I think the main appeal of the game to me is what is mentioned in the Joystiq article. I love numbers and stats. Levelling up, inventory management and weapon stats really appeal to me and I find them rather addictive. It's also a blast when playing with friends.
I'm not sure this will help anyone make up their mind at all but hopefully you found it an interesting read regardless!

I did find it an interesting read. And your opinion is one I can relate to.
There wasnt anything that I can say I disagree with except maybe I just 'got it' straight away.
Im glad you enjoy it to and after all thats what its all about.

Re: Destiny
Finished the last story mission last night which was epic but got booted from the server for no reason during the final cut scene....
The game counts the mission as being finished....I'm going to have to do it again to see the ending
Still it an't all bad at least the last mission seems to rain loot down on you.

Re: Destiny
Man the game really opens up in the end game scheme of things. Strike playlists, reputations with various factions that aren't to much of a grind and daily challenges. It's like everything gets turned up to 11!
Re: Destiny
Destiny is a good game, just not a great one. It`s a shiny updated Halo which is`nt necessarily a bad thing. I just get the feeling playing it i`ve seen & been there before. Having played all the Halo games (never really liked any of them online!) i was expecting something new,on that front it fails. Which is a shame. I`m sure loads of dlc will come out to try & keep it fresh, but my copy will be long since sold when it does so.

Re: Destiny
The Queen's Wrath event is now live for all players. New bounties and Queen Rep gear if you can level your rep with the faction
Details: http://www.vg247.com/2014/09/23/destinys-queens-wrath-event-kicks-off-at-2am-pacific-today/
I'll be working towards that fancy looking cloak and one or two of the weapons

Re: Destiny
I'm still confused by the post 20 levelling really. Kinda irrelevant as I'm not there yet anyway!
Re: Destiny
The game adds a gear score system which relies on Reputation grinding to aid progression. It's probably on of the most MMO-ish mechanics in the game.MarkySharky wrote:I'm still confused by the post 20 levelling really. Kinda irrelevant as I'm not there yet anyway!
Basically all armour slot gear after level 20 has a light stat associated with it. If it an't got light it an't worth your time.
The cumulative total of your light stat on your various pieces of armour gives you your light level (levels 21-30) the higher the level the better your gear and the more things you can do in the game.
The easiest way to get equipment with light stats is to level up your reputation with the game's various factions Vanguard, Crucible, Dead Orbit, Future War Cult, New Monarchy and temporarily with the Queen during the Queen's Wrath event.
Running bounties while playing in the Crucible and Strike Playlists is a must (Crucible and Strike Playlists also give you Marks which you need to buy Vanguard and Crucible Gear). Once you hit level 2 with most factions you can start buying their higher tier gear.
Dead Orbit, Future War Cult and New Monarchy reputation is gained by equipping the faction's class item for your class (these are available from the faction vendors in The Tower). Any Vanguard or Crucible reputation gains are then converted into experience for your chosen faction.
eg/
While you are wearing a Dead Orbit cloak on your Hunter. Every bounty, strike in the Strike Playlist, or special event gains and Crucible match will give you Dead Orbit reputation points instead of Vanguard and Crucible points.
There, nice and simple!
Re: Destiny
Any idea how long it's on for? I assume the bounties are rinse and repeat once refreshed?
Edit: runs until 6th October

Re: Destiny
There's a daily limit to the bounties but I generally find it hard to complete a whole day's set in one evening.MarkySharky wrote:Any idea how long it's on for? I assume the bounties are rinse and repeat once refreshed?

Re: Destiny
I did all the bounties bar the crucible ones last night. 200 Fallen headshots became a little tiresome!
Re: Destiny
Did the raid, The Vault of Glass last night with some friends and it was a blast! An awesome highly focused team based chunk of content that requires you to work together.
The only downsides were the crazy amount of bugs we encounters that meant having to reset the instance a few times!

Re: Destiny
Yeah I've done it 3 times now and it's always satisfying especially as it only takes us around 2 hours now.
