Is Playstation 4.5 going to happen?
It started as a story run by Kotaku last week, with most dismissing it as rumour and speculation, but Eurogamer is now saying they have independently confirmed it's real and that there are prototype devices in Sony R&D labs. They say they also have more than one source referring to it as Playstation 4K. There is an in depth article running through three possible scenarios highlighting how and why it could happen, and how it fits into the current PS4 situation, which is very healthy of course. It also comes on the back of MS announcing that they were looking at some form of upgradeable XBOX going forward.

Do you think it's a good idea if it happens, and would you shell out again for a new, higher spec PS4 so soon after buying the original?

I don't know anything, then again I haven't been in work for two weeks and I'm usually the last person to know about these things
Re: Is Playstation 4.5 going to happen?
If it happens it doesn't make much sense to me to be honest. Sony are dominant this gen with what looks like being the best selling console since PS2, so they don't need to do it for commercial reasons. Are many console gamer's even bothered about 4K gaming anyway at this point? I'm not, I haven't even got a 4K TV, and have no immediate plans to get one. Some are saying it might just play 4K Blu-rays with possibly a bit more GPU power to upscale HD games to UHD, again if that's the case I don't see the point. It probably wouldn't happen until 2017 at the earliest anyway, so by that time Sony might as well just wait another couple of years and go the whole hog with a full blown PS5.
Then there's the effect it would have on the current PS4. It will pass 40 million sold pretty soon, are Sony really going to say to all those millions of people thanks for buying PS4 but actually it's not up to scratch, how about buying this new improved version to get the full Playstation experience? Oh and you'll need PSVR for that too, and a 4K TV if you haven't got one, fine if you've a spare grand or two but not many people will have. If it is confirmed PS4 sales could stall too, if you were planning on getting a PS4 this year but heard a more powerful version was coming out next year you'd wait wouldn't you?
Maybe they were spooked by MS saying they were looking into some form of upgradeable XBOX going forward, I dunno, but it just seems a risky, unnecessary move by Sony if they do it that could fracture the Playstation user base.

If it does happen I'll just see it as the PS4's equivalent of the PS3 Slim. That made some performance improvements but it was essentially the same machine just in a different shell.

Looks like it might be more significant than the usual "slim" model if this article is to be believed.

Re: Is Playstation 4.5 going to happen?
Sony has finally confirmed the existence of PS4K, describing it as a "high end PS4" aimed at hardcore gamer's that will sit alongside and complement the current PS4, and as the name suggest it will run content in 4K, although it's still not clear if this just 4K video, upscaled games or both. They say both consoles will be fully supported throughout the cycle and all games will be available on both machines, no PS4K only games. They also said it wont be shown at E3, nor did they say anything about release dates or specs.
